Many of our doctors have worked in the ER and tell stories about how patients come in and they have no way of knowing who they are, anything about their medical history nor how to get in touch with their emergency contacts.
Do you know that you can set up something called a “Medical ID” on your iPhone that a medical professional can access even if your iPhone is locked? You can set it up within 2 minutes and it can save your life.
Just find the “Health” app that comes with your iPhone running iOS 8 (if you haven’t already upgraded, this might be a good reason to do so.) If you can’t find the icon, just swipe down on the homescreen and do a search for “Health.”
Just click on the icon with the heart and once the application opens find the icon on the bottom that reads “* Medical ID.”
Once you get to Medical ID screen, fill out as much information as you can. You can add the following information:
- Your Photo
- Medical Conditions
- Medical Notes
- Allergies & Reactions
- Emergency Contacts
- Blood Type
- Organ Donor
One thing to note is that anyone that has access to your phone will be able to access this information. If you feel uncomfortable adding any information, just exclude it. Just make sure to include your most important medical information. It might save your life!
